The Boy from the Orient in May
This one is purely autobiographical on Momoko Sakura’s part. It’s also chock full of good ol’ good-natured Japanese xenophobia, and I won’t be surprised if this is going to be the first episode some people actively dislike because of it.
Orient? - Although the term has largely been abandoned, Orient technically refers to all of Asia, not just Eastern Asia which is what typically comes to mind when the term comes up. Since India is an Asian country, it’s technically part of The Orient, which I guess is why all the kids in Maruko’s class insist on saying Orihara’s from the Orient. That’s probably not fair, considering he has a Japanese name and was probably actually born in Japan, but hey, good ol’ xenophobia rears it’s head once again.
Yoko from Yokohama - The “sick burn” Sekiguchi’s friend drops on Maruko after Sekiguchi asks if she’s got feelings for him is lifted verbatim from a 1975 hit song, Minato no Yoko Yokohama Yokosuka, or “Yoko from the Port in Yokohama or in Yokosuka”, by the Downtown Boogie Woogie Band. From what I can glean, some guy is going from place to place looking for some girl named Yoko and talking to lots of people, and people keep questioning what relationship he has to her. Watch a performance below, although I’m not sure if it’s the original band or not.
The Parental Visit of Melancholy
Parental Visits - These shouldn’t require too much explaining. Basically, they’re parent-teacher interviews without the actual interview – class goes on as normal and the parents observe.
Nagasawa - This is the first appearance of Nagasawa in the anime, a character who eventually became popular enough to garner his own spin-off manga. (Not like you could guess that from his boring appearance here, right?) Anyways, he ends up entirely different from the wiener we meet here, a sour ball of cynicism with a chip on his shoulder a mile high.
Thai Tie - Sensei’s tie pun was way different in the original Japanese, and was completely untranslatable, hence me coming up with my own tie pun here. Basically, he mentions he’s wearing a share, or stylish, necktie he bought in Kobe. He then mentions if you put share and Kobe together, you get sharekoube, which means “skull”. Yep. Hilarious. Maybe I shoulda just went with that!
“Let’s press forward, shall we?” - What Sensei says here is actually “Tsugi itte myou!” or “Let’s move on to something else!”, which was a catchphrase of Chosuke Ikariya, the leader of the comedy/rock group The Drifters which were mentioned in last episode’s show notes. Tama-chan is actually commenting on the use of the catchphrase when she speaks to Maruko after. It didn’t seem worth it to try to cram this reference and subsequent explanatory note in when the whole point was Maruko getting in trouble afterwards, so I just washed my hands of it and left it out.
Hamaji - I’m pretty sure we’ve seen him kicking around before, but this is the first full-fledged introduction of Hamaji, the class clown character who’s also stood the test of time and is part of the franchise to this very day. His voice is way different here, but it’s still good ol’ Hamaji.
Droppin’ the Deuce - Yeah, Hamaji’s not actually making a poop joke here. Sensei asks him if he understands fraction reduction, or yakubun, and Hamaji brings up yakuhanbun, which means “approximately half”. He then says once that’s abbreviated you get yakubun. Yep. That’s comedy gold right there. Can’t believe I changed it.
I think the flowers shown when Maruko is considering apologizing to her mother, after realizing how much the haircut must have meant (weeeell…), I think the flowers shown are cosmos flowers! Also known as the autumn sakura.
A maiden’s heart and cleanliness appear to be some of its meanings.
